Astrodienst / Astro.com Review By Ann Clark

Astrodienst / Astro.com

Part 4 of 5 – Ann Clark’s Favorite Astrology Websites

untitled

Astrodienst, also often referred to as astro.com, is a website of thousands of pages, and available in a choice of eight languages, at a click of the mouse. It’s an all-encompassing astrology website, invaluable to any who love astrology, at whatever level and style. Astrodienst, translated from the German means Astro-Service, and this site certainly gives excellent service to its readers. Link: http://www.astro.com/

Star act of the site for many is the facility to enter birth data – your own, or of friends and relatives, and instantly have the natal chart appear on screen. It doesn’t stop there though – you can customize the charts in many ways, include extra items such as rare and not so rare asteroids, Black Moon Lilith, some Arabian Parts, and much more. There’s a choice of chart styles, options to include progressions and transits – it’s almost as good as having your own astrology software to play with. As part of the Extended Chart Selection you can obtain a detailed reading of your own or others’ charts from your collection by going to “Pullen/Astrolog” and scrolling down the menu to simple chart delineation by Walter Pullen. This delineation is described as “simple” but there is a wealth of information not available elsewhere, to be gleaned from it. It’s impossible to do this area justice in a few lines, but time spent experimenting will convince any visitor of the value of Astrodienst.

There’s much else of interest: daily horoscope forecasts based on your exact date, place and time of birth, a personal astro portrait of you and any others from your collection of data. Areas of special interest to lovers include Astro-Click Partner, Astro-Click Love, and Liz Greene’s Astrology for Lovers.

A section called “VIP Astro-Twins” offers, under each birthdate, a list of well-known people born on that day, in various years. In some cases, a note of the rising sign is included. The list is more extensive than many other, similar lists commonly found on astrology websites. I found an almost exact astro-twin here!

A useful collection of articles, written by renowned astrologers, appears in the section called “Understanding Astrology”. Astrodienst also makes available to its users an on-line 6,000 year ephemeris – this alone is worth a visit to the site if you happen to be without an ephemeris at home.

The website also hosts an astrology forum where views are exchanged on all manner of astrology-related issues, from general & psychological astrology, to horary, mundane and political matters. There’s also a section where inexperienced readers can place a request for more advanced members to present an interpretation of a natal chart, and/or answer questions on it.

Astrodienst is well-organized and clearly mapped – it’s difficult to get lost, and easy to find anything you’re seeking.

When I reviewed Astrotheme and Skyscript a few weeks ago, I wrote that Astrotheme reflects a Gemini-like image, while Skyscript has a more serious, Virgo/Capricorn flavor. Following that train of thought then, Astrodienst seems to fall somewhere between the two: lighter than Skyscript but more serious than Astrotheme (though lacking that handy collation facility at Astrotheme). Astrodienst has so much to offer for free that I’d say it resembles Sagittarius in its expansive generosity! As well as all the free information, there is opportunity to purchase personal forecasts and reports from a variety on offer at the Astrodienst Shop.

Finally, the newest feature offered by Astrodienst is Astro Wiki – a complete A to Z enclyclopedia of astrology. An introduction to the new feature, written by the CEO of Astrodienst, can be read at http://wiki.astro.com/astrowiki/en/Astrowiki-en:About. This will definitely be something to be saved in Favorites Files!

Tropical versus Sidereal Zodiac

The following is an excerpt from an e-mail sent to Sign Show from Howard Beckman, Director, Vedic Cultural Fellowship (www.vedicworld.org)

We Vedic astrologers only use the “sidereal zodiac” to calculate the orbits of the planets in our solar system. It is accurate astronomically and is the same zodiac and method of calculation used by each and every astronomer in the world. It is based on science in that regard. Most western astrologers (although not all and more and more are now using the sidereal) use the tropical zodiac. This is basically an equinoctial system. It’s premise at its inception was that the Sun would be in the exact same place at the vernal equinox each spring astronomically as it was 1700 (approx) years ago when this astrological system was created. Therefore the premise was based on the earth orbiting the Sun in exactly 365 days. We all know that it takes an extra 1/4 day for the earth to orbit the Sun. This is why we add a day to the calendar every 4 years (leap year) to make up for this to allow our calendar to always agree with the seasons. Right?

Western tropical astrologers never did this and still at the spring equinox every year they say “the Sun is now at 0 degrees Aries, the beginning of the zodiac”. You can ask any astronomer anywhere where the Sun was this past year at that time and they will tell you “at about 6 degrees Pisces”. Therefore using the sidereal zodiac (meaning that for most people alive today all planets in the horoscope will actually be 23 to 24 degrees back from the positions calculated by most western tropical astrologers) gives accuracy. So for say the sign of Leo, going from July 23rd to August 17th in the tropical zodiac, the dates for the Sun’s being within it runs from about August 17th to September 16th. Plain and simple. An experienced and dedicated Vedic astrologer can actually predict many events of a person’s life and easily can pinpoint “spot on” personality traits, likes and dislikes, directives, emotional and physical attributes and much more. I have been doing compatibility comparisons for years and when I have correct birth data can guarantee my accuracy.

An Apology To Diana Garland – 2009 Horoscopes

Diana Garland did some of the best 2009 video horoscopes. Many video astrologers provide a couple minutes of content, which can seem a little short and too general. Not Diana Garland. Be prepared for a thought provoking 15 minute discussion.

Why the apology? When I listed Diana Garland in ” Best 2009 Horoscope Videos” – I linked her name to the wrong astrologer.

To visit Diana, please go http://www.dianagarland.co.uk/

To get a sample of her horoscopes, I present her Libra 2009 Horoscope below.

2009 Video Horoscopes Awards – Great Videos

Many astrologers created 2009 “year-long” Horoscope videos for each zodiac sign. Here are links to some of the best videos and my editorial comments.

Nadiya Shah – Sign Show loves Nadiya Shah which is why she is listed first.

Barabara Goldsmith – Very detailed and comprehensive.

Diana Garland – Full of pratical advice and suggestions. Please note that each sign has a two part series (1/2) and (2/2). She gives you almost 15 minutes of commentary.

David Cammegh – Co-Winner of Sign Show’s Best 2009 Video Horoscope. I can imagne him doing a reading at a local pub.

KT The Astrologer – The videos of this well-known astrologer have a few more graphical effects than the other videos on this list.

Terence Guardino – Co-Winner of Sign Show’s Best 2009 Video Horoscope.

Did I leave any good ones off the list. Please comment below

The Best 2009 Video Horoscopes

These are my personal favorite annual horoscopes for 2009. However, there are many great video horoscopes that did not make the list because they did not meet my criteria for a “The Best 2009 Video Horoscope”.

Here are my criteria:

1) The Astrologer had to create an individual video for each Zodiac sign.
2) The forecast had to cover the entire year of 2009 – not a week, month or quarter.

The two winners had something in common. Both of them made full use of the YouTube’s maximum video length – 10 minutes. A year is a big amount of time to cover and I felt that these horoscopes had more substance than the other ones that I watched.

Please feel free to provide your opinion.

The Co-Winners are . . .

David Cammegh has great energy. He combines astrology with a card reading. I know enough about tarot cards to tell you that he is is not using a traditional deck.
